PREPARATION for a £4 million upgrade to an adult disability day service facility on the site of a former high school is underway.

Flintshire Council’s planning committee gave approval in February for a new learning disability day services facility at the site of the former John Summers High School in Queensferry.

The new building will replace the Glanrafon site on Chester Road West – which was then described as “not fit for purpose” by councillors.

Workers have been seen at the site this week and fencing boards have been put up around the school's playing fields.

Regarding the Glanrafon Resource Centre Neil Ayling, chief officer for social services said: "The site is currently being prepared for building work to commence and it is anticipated that the new resource centre will completed and open to service users in Spring 2019.”

Queensferry councillor David Wisinger welcomed the start of the works.

He said: "I'm very glad it has started, the other building isn't fir for use any more.

"I'll be please do see a new, modern building there and it will be a state of the art facility for the people of Flintshire."

Earlier this year Flintshire Council determined that prior approval for the demolition of John Summers High School in Queensferry was not necessary.

Following the decision Claire Homard, interim chief officer for education and youth, confirmed to the Leader that the demolition of the school was likely to take place between July and November this year.
