DELYN MP David Hanson says he is appalled by new figures showing unemployment in the constituency has risen for yet another consecutive month.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Delyn in August 2018 was 1,035.

This represents a rate of 3.2 per cent of the economically active population aged 16 to 64.

According to the figures the number of claimants in Delyn constituency is 270 higher than August 2017 and 30 higher than July 2018.

There were 225 claimants aged 18 to 24 in August 2018, 40 higher than August 2017.

Mr Hanson said: “The disarray within the UK Government is clear for all to see and it is impacting our communities.

"At a time of great uncertainty, we need a government with clear direction and drive to secure for everyone a decent job with employment rights.

“We now have over 1,000 people out of work.

"That’s 1,000 people who want to support their families and do the right thing. Children are growing up in households without a working parent or guardian which means that they are more likely to fall into poverty and continue a spiral of unemployment.

"If the UK Government do not take action to support businesses in North Wales then we will only see the situation get worse.

“The Welsh Government and Flintshire Council are taking all steps necessary to support our county.

"They are investing money into new housing and improving our local healthcare facilities.

"But they can only fully achieve their dreams with a supportive UK Government.

“Unemployment figures are truly awful, but hidden behind these top-line figures is a growing workforce of people on zero-hours contracts or agency work.

"People are now being forced into a position where they have fewer employment rights than eight years ago.

"If we want an economy that truly works for everyone we need to tackle these unfair employment laws as well as investing in the local economy.”
