A MAN has been sentenced after admitting punching his sister and headbutting a police officer.

Geraint Bowen, 35, of Meadow Avenue, Buckley, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court where a day earlier he had admitted assaulting Tracey Wilson and PC Ian Millington on September 4.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said at 4pm police were alerted to a domestic incident at the home address shared by Bowen and Ms Wilson and Bowen appeared to be in an aggressive state of mind.

He had punched his sister after an argument relating to money and she suffered a loose tooth and a bruised eye.

Bowen then became aggressive and headbutted PC Millington, who had tried to explain why he was being arrested.

Emma Simoes, defending, said: "You will be able to see he is not a very well man.

"He is very remorseful. He does love his sister. She does offer him support.

"He accepts he was wound up and accepts he was agitated. Perhaps he wasn't thinking."

The court heard Bowen was dependent on alcohol, he was intoxicated at the time of the assault and was also schizophrenic.

Bowen was ordered to comply with a 12 month community order, pay a £120 fine, £85 costs, an £85 surcharge and £50 compensation to the officer.

Magistrates' chairman Jonathan Sankey said: "I think the first thing to say is you are lucky to have your sister.

"This is giving you the opportunity to do something. You have got to engage with the mental health services. They are here to help you. I don't want to see you again."

Mr Sankey said compensation would not be paid to his sister, adding: "You can make it up to her in other ways. She's crucial in your life."
