A CHURCH has received more than 5,000 knitted poppies towards its display to mark this year's Remembrance Sunday.

This year marks 100 years since the ending of the First World War, and St Bartholomew's Church in Sealand is pulling out all the stops to commemorate those who served.

They are currently collecting knitted poppies to sew onto a canvas for a cascading display which will be placed inside the church in time for Remembrance Weekend.

The poppies will fill the inside of the church tower, and through a projection it is hoped the poppies will also be able to be seen from outside the church.

Earlier in the year the church started to appeal for knitted poppies to be sent, and so far they have have received over 5,000 poppies.

But being only almost half way to finishing the display, St Bartholomew's is appealing for even more to add to their already impressive collection.

Jennifer Watson, church warden, said: ''It's a great opportunity to bring the Sealand community together under one common goal, but more importantly to remember all the brave men from Sealand and the surrounding areas who fought for this country in the First World War and the those that have followed.

''It is especially poignant with 2018 marking 100 years since the ending of the First World War.''

St Batholomew's will hold a candle-lit vigil on November 10 to start a full weekend of commemorating both World Wars.
