A CHARITY football match in memory of a Mold man has raised £1,920 for a hospice.

Carl Whibberley was supported with physiotherapy, pain relief and symptom control by Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham over a period of 18 months before he died at home aged 54 in 2017.

His widow Su has set up a `Forget Me Not’ tribute fund in his memory and recently organised a football match at Mold Alex FC between the Queen’s Head and the Ruthin Castle - two Mold pubs that Mr Whibberley, a self-employed builder, used to go to.

Mold Alex gave the use of their facilities free of charge for the event when friends and family played for the two teams. The club also donated £100.

Players each donated £10 and there was a bucket collection on the day as well as a raffle and auction with lots of donated prizes.

Su and Carl’s son Luke took part and she was also supported by her other children Zoe, Demi and Kieran. The winning trophy now has pride of place in The Queen’s Head, who won the match 4-3.

Su said: “Carl had been suffering with cancer for a number of years and the football match idea came from him before he died.

"We thought it would be a great way to raise money and to bring friends and family together to remember him.

“We had an amazing day and are thrilled to have raised so much for such a wonderful charity.

"We are grateful to everyone who supported the day and to Mold Alex FC for having us.

"Nightingale House gave Carl, and us as a family, so much support and their staff helped to make it possible for him to pass away at home as he wished.

"The hospice is a special facility which needs lots of support from the community so we are pleased to be able to help.”

Winning team manager Dwaine Hall from The Queen’s Head said: “It was a brilliant day and all for a good cause in memory of Carl who was such a popular person.

"It was good to see how many people turned out both to play and to support the match.

"It was played in good spirits with lots of friendly rivalry but obviously the best team won.”

Debbie Barton, hospice area fundraiser, said: “I would like to congratulate Su on such an amazing achievement and thank everyone involved for making the match and associated fundraising such a success.

"Carl was obviously very well thought of and many people have come together to make this possible. What a fantastic tribute.”
