A man whose jaw and eye socket were broken in a night time street attack needed "facial reconstruction" in hospital, a judge heard.

The violence happened in Abergele Road, the main street at Colwyn Bay, last May.

Lewis Powell, aged 21, the attacker, of Minafon, Old Colwyn, was jailed for 22 months after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon - an estate agent's ‘For Sale’ sign - and intimidating a witness.

"You repeatedly punched your victim and left him with facial fractures that required surgery," Judge Timothy Petts told him at Caernarfon crown court.

That wasn't the end because when a friend went to the scene to recover a lens from the victim's glasses Powell had grabbed the pole,“ and pursued him.

Emmalyne Downing, prosecuting, said Powell had thrown bottles at the friend, Mr Darryl Jones, and kicked over recycling bins, shouting "You're dead". He had wielded the pole “like a bat.”

The witness intimidation related to an incident on June 22 when Mr Jones went into a Spar store to try and avoid the defendant, who threatened: "I'm going to get you shot."

Miss Downing said both men stated in impact statements that they feared Lewis.

She revealed that previously he had been convicted of a street assault and theft which took place at Old Colwyn in December 2017.

Defence barrister Dafydd Roberts said Powell accepted that there would be immediate imprisonment. He had mental health and behavioural problems and suffered from ADHD.

However he had resolved to address his behaviour and while in prison on remand had attended sessions to improve his English.

Judge Petts sentenced Powell to 16 months for the wounding with a concurrent six months for having the offensive weapon, with a consecutive six months for the intimidation, making 22 months in all.

"It is clear that immediate custody is the only sentence that can be imposed," declared the judge.
