Donald Trump, Marge Simpson and Ducula battled it out as fun-loving fundraisers went quackers at a charity duck race.

Crowds of supporters cheered on their charges at Harry’s Duck Race which was held at Pontblyddn Cricket Club in support of Hope House Children’s Hospices.

The fun event was organised by Julia and Jeff Jones in memory of their son Harry who died in his sleep in September 2005 from cardiac arrhythmia, a heart condition that had gone unnoticed and undiagnosed.

Julia says the family have organised a duck race in memory of her son and to raise funds for Hope House every year since Harry’s tragic and unexpected death.

She said: “After Harry passed away we were so grateful Hope House Hospice allowed him to rest in their special Snowflake Room. The support we had was amazing and we have always tried to raise funds for Hope House in Harry’s memory.

“This year we are also donating some of the cash raised to the Kidney Research Fund at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Harry’s twin brother, Charlie, now 17, had a kidney transplant after suffering renal failure in 2013 and we feel we should support Alder Hey too.”

She added: “It’s been a wonderful day. Ducks were sold for £1 each with a small trophy and small prizes up-for-grabs. We sold more than 1,300 ducks, so many we had to hold heats!

“Hope House sold corporate ducks for £30 each which firms were encouraged to decorate. Some of the themes and art work are amazing and really spectacular.

“It’s proved to be our most successful Harry’s Duck Race to date and we are looking forward to seeing how much we raised.”

Hope House Children’s Hospices head of fundraising Alison Marsh says everyone enjoyed a fantastic day at Pontblyddn Cricket Club.

She said: “It’s been amazing and we sold more ducks than we ever have before so a big thanks to everyone who took part.

“The overall duck race winner was Jeff’s mum, Iris Jones, which is amazing that out of more than 1,300 ducks hers came home first.

“The corporate race was won by Clogau who also won the prize for the funniest duck with their Donald Trump Duck. The overall prize for the best dressed duck went to Little Scholar’s Nursery.

“But everyone who took part is a winner. It really has been a wonderful event which has seen us raise in excess of £3,000 which is amazing. We are so grateful to Julia and Jeff for their continued support."

She added: “Sadly, every week, three local families face their biggest fear and their child dies. Hope House Children’s Hospices cannot stop children dying but we can stop families suffering on their own.

“When they are facing the most devastating loss of their lives we must be there. We need to reach every child, mum, dad, sister and brother and to do this we need to raise more money so we can offer even more services such as our Snowflake Room.

“We need to raise in excess of £6m a year to support all the children and families we help from across North Wales, Shropshire and parts of Cheshire.

“That’s why it’s so important we have as much help as possible from communities and businesses across the region.”
