A choir from Wrexham has been showing the south that they mean business by picking up the wins at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

Côr Daw, the Wrexham choir for Welsh learners, swept the board on learners day at the Eisteddfod by coming in first place in both the small group choir and large group choir.

The small group choir was for up to nine singers and performed a Michel Jackson themed medley meanwhile the large up to 40 voices choir performed a number of Elton John songs, translated into Welsh.

As well as the choir performances, Wrexham had winners in Stephanie Greer and Lynn Bateman of Coleg Cambria, who won the learner's solo sing and the learner's recitation respectively.

Pam Evans-Hughes, who fronts the choirs, said: "It was certainly a Wrexham takeover with Michael Jackson winning the small group choir and being voted the adjudicators choice. Out of all the mornings winners they were asked to perform again in the afternoon on the Millennium theatre stage.

"The Elton John medley won the learners choir competition. I only heard ten days before the Eisteddfod that I had been given clearance to perform the medley in Welsh from Elton’s publishers. My daughter had even tweeted Elton to see if he would do anything. I was about to have to pull out of the Eisteddfod.

"All of the Welsh learners are from Wrexham, so a massive achievement for our town and north Wales."
