A man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting assaulting a security guard at Wrexham McDonald's on Regent Street.

Michael Thomas Butterfield, 25, of no fixed abode, became involved in an altercation with Michael Brindley at around half past midnight on July 27 and had to be restrained with the help of a member of the public.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told the court Butterfield had thrown a punch at Mr Brindley after being warned by him for verbally abusing another customer over the use of a toilet as CCTV of the incident was shown to Wrexham Magistrates court.

Mr Espie said the punch had caused a small cut above the left eye of Mr Brindley and that Butterfield had been on a community order at the time of the incident.

Emma Simoes, defending, said Butterfield's crux had always been alcohol but had recently turned a corner and had only turned to drink on the night in question after his partner had suffered a miscarriage.

Chair of the Magistrates Ceri Hughes handed Butterfield a 21 day prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and ordered him to pay compensation to Mr Brindley of £100, with additional costs of £85.

She said: "This latest offence took place while you were on a community order and we are not impressed."
