WORKS to clear out unsafe old chapel have begun.

Flintshire County Council applied to Wrexham Magistrates for an order under section 77 of the Building Act 1984 for The Old Chapel on Chester Street, which has caused weeks of disruption to those travelling in and out of the town.

Last month Wrexham Magistrates Court heard from Christopher Moss - representing the council - that the only realistic option would be to demolish the structure, which was declared to be unsafe and at imminent risk of collapse.

The order, which was granted by magistrates with immediate effect, allowed the council access to the site from July 31, to clear any content and waste from it prior to the demolition work taking place.

On Thursday, a worker at the site told the Leader efforts to clear out the building are now underway.

A rubbish chute had also been set up on the scaffolding around the chapel and a skip, in addition to a digger, had arrived at the site.
