FIREFIGHTERS are still "keeping an eye" on a large inferno which engulfed a Llangollen mountainside over two weeks ago.

North Wales Fire and Rescue were called to Llantysilio at around 2.20pm on Thursday, July 19 - and experts are still on scene 17 days later.

A spokesman confirmed today: "We are still in attendance at Llantysilio. One crew is still there using dampening techniques and keeping an eye on the situation."

The Leader previously reported how the huge blaze required a record-amount of crews to tackle the flames.

Motorists, cyclist and tourist were diverted as thick smoke plummeted, causing the Horseshoe Pass to close for several days.

Acts of kindness and gratitude were shown by residents to the dedicated fire crews for their hard work in keeping the inferno under control.
