A WALL that collapsed onto a pavement in Chester six months ago remains unrepaired – and one pensioner is fuming about it.

A three to four metre section of the Victorian wall on Liverpool Road fell down at the end of January leaving rubble on the public path that has been cordoned off ever since.

The Standard understands that there is a disagreement over responsibility between the council and several homeowners on Victoria Court – whose properties back onto the wall.

One of the residents, who is in her eighties and did not wish to be identified, believes the damage has been caused by vibrations from the high volume of traffic.

Salt-spreading during the winter months would also have contributed to the degradation of the sandstone wall, she said.

“Buses shake the living daylights out of the wall at regular intervals,” the woman said. “Surely the council have got to accept some responsibility for this?

“If not then why don’t they just go ahead and say you can now go ahead and get quotes from masons to have it repaired? They’ve taken over it but won’t let us get quotes.

Chester and District Standard:

The section of wall on Liverpool Road collapsed in January and has not yet been repaired.

“We’re like mushrooms – we’re being kept totally in the dark. There are supposed to have been three surveys but we haven’t seen the results of any of them. A joke’s a joke but this is getting ridiculous.”

She added: “I can’t sell my house while this is going on. It took five years to get the wall collapse on Rock Lane fixed – I might not have that long!

“You get to the stage where you’re losing the will to live.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council has said the pavement must remain cordoned off for public safety.

It also states that officers have been in regular contact with the homeowners affected by the collapsed wall.

In a statement, Cllr Karen Shore, cabinet member for environment, said: “Earlier this year a section of a sandstone boundary wall collapsed for a length of approximately three to four metres at the rear of two properties on Victoria Court, Chester.

“As a result, a section of the public footway forming part of the A5116 Liverpool Road has been temporarily closed in order to protect public safety.

“The safety of the public remains our top priority and the Heras fencing around the affected area must remain in place for the foreseeable future in order to ensure the safety of the public.

“An independent structural engineer is investigating the reasons for the collapse and assessing the structural condition of the whole wall, specifically identifying any other points of weakness. The council’s Highway Service have been in frequent contact with the owners and occupiers of the properties affected by the collapse.

“The diversionary route is via the pedestrian crossings on Liverpool Road and on the west side of the footway.”
