FAMILY members took part in a charity bike ride in remembrance of a woman who died from a heart attack.

Carl Springham, 44, rode from Cardiff castle to Flint castle in memory of his mum, who died on July 15, 2008.

Carl and his cousin Adrian Lamb set off from Cardiff about 7.30am and arrived in Shrewsbury for 7pm where he was met by his wife Sharon to finish to journey on Saturday.

Leighton Wheeler, family friend, also joined in the charity ride from Chester and the money raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Carl said: “We had our tops on and people were donating when we stopped off at pubs.

“I found the journey quite easy considering, the training paid off. We were powered by jelly babies by the end.

“It was a hell of an experience and I’m glad and proud that I’ve done it. All the planning was worth it, it was fantastic.”

A disco night was also held at Flint Football Club to raise further funds from the charity and included a raffle, an auction and a performance from Nik Lloyd.

The Airbus worker added: “We only had one accident where we both ended up falling off our bikes into cow dung and ended up having to get hosed down, it was more like Tough Mudder at that point.

“We had a disco in the night which was absolutely fantastic, it was quiet at the start but there wasn’t a spare seat by the end. It was all quite emotional really.

“Especially when we arrived at Flint Castle loads of people turned up, we even had a friend who travelled 100 miles to see us complete it which was a lovely surprise.

“All the people of Flint are amazing. I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that supported us over the last few months.”

The final amount is still unknown but £670 was raised from the night, Carl has raised about £1,400 from his Justgiving page and Adrian has raised about £800 from his page. Carl said he is expecting more donations to come through.
