TODAY'S gig by Tom Jones has been postponed just hours after organisers said the show would go on.

The legendary singer, who's hits include It's Not Unusual, Sex Bomb and Delilah, cancelled his performance at a venue near Chichester last night due to illness – just one day before he was due to perform in Chester.

And now Sir Tom Jones' official twitter account has confirmed the concert due to take place at Chester Racecourse today (Thursday, July 19) will now be pushed back until Sunday, August 12.

Sir Tom is being treated in hospital for a bacterial infection.

The tweet says: "It is with regret that we have to postpone Tom Jones’ performance at Chester Racecourse this evening. This show will be rescheduled for Sunday, August 12. All tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled date. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, refunds will be available at point of purchase.

"Sir Tom Jones has a bacterial infection for which he is being treated in hospital. The condition is being well managed and we are hoping for a speedy recovery. He is extremely sorry and disappointed not to be able to perform tonight, and sincerely apologies for inconveniences caused to the audience and all those who are involved in the event."

14,000 fans were due to attend the global superstar's gig at Chester Racecourse today.

Hospitality guests are being contacted by the venue.

A spokesperson for promoter LHG Live said: "We are naturally disappointed that tonight’s Concert at Chester Racecourse in unable to go ahead as scheduled.

"Tom’s health is the priority and we all wish him a speedy recovery back to full fitness as soon as possible.

"We are pleased that the show has been re-scheduled for Sunday 12 August and we look forward to seeing everyone then for a spectacular evening.

"All hospitality guests will be contacted directly by Chester Racecourse for revised arrangements or to answer any questions you may have. 

"Thank you for your support and understanding as we revise plans."
