WREXHAM Cemetery has clinched a Green Flag Award.

Keep Wales Tidy, an environmental charity, has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.

A record-breaking 201 parks and green spaces, including universities, cemeteries, woodlands and allotments across Wales have met the high standards needed to receive the coveted Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award.

Wrexham has gained the green flag award for Wrexham Cemetery.

This is the first year the award has gone to the cemetery and marks the work the team has undertaken with Heritage Lottery Funding to transform the cemetery facilities and encourage the community to become involved in the site.

The green flags will be flying at Wrexham Cemetery, Acton Park, Alyn Waters Country Park, Bellevue Park, Ponciau Banks Park and T? Mawr Country Park in recognition of their excellent facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green space.

Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for environment and transport, said: “I welcome the news that Wrexham once again has green flag status and would like to thank everybody involved in ensuring that our parks remain attractive for the public to visit.

“Congratulations to all those sites taking the Green Flag Community Award as well – it’s an excellent commendation.

“I am particularly pleased that Wrexham Cemetery has gained its first Green Flag Award, a real achievement by the staff and Friends Group for the cemetery.”
