A DETERMINED schoolgirl who has a chronic bowel condition walked a whopping seven miles to raise money for other poorly children in hospital.

Smiley Poppy-Mae Jones, of Mornington Avenue in Ellesmere Port, trekked from Stanney Woods to Chester Zoo on Sunday, July 15 with parents Sharon and Simon and two of their friends.

The five-year-old had hoped to raise £250 or more for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool where she has received treatment.

But she has obliterated that target with the latest total standing at more than £1,850.

Sharon told The Standard they hope to hand over a cheque for £2,000 to the children’s hospital in the coming days.

“The walk went brilliantly and Poppy was amazing,” she said. “We’re so proud of her.”

The tot has bravely dealt with two gastroenterological issues since she was a baby and her time in hospital has given her compassion for others beyond her years.

Sharon previously told this newspaper: “Because she’s spent so much time in hospital she’s seen a lot of poorly children. She’s just a very selfless person; she’ll help anyone.”

Poppy-Mae, who attends Cambridge Road Primary School and raised more than £100 for the British Heart Foundation earlier this year, said: “I want to raise money for the poorly tummies.”

Sharon said her daughter’s condition means she requires a strictly managed diet and is often bloated and in pain.

But the youngster has an incredibly positive attitude to life and is constantly thinking of ways to help others.
