PUPILS have proven their green credentials after being awarded a top eco accolade.

Ysgol Brynffordd has received the platinum flag award after previously gaining three green flag awards thanks to the environmental education programme 'eco-schools'.

Eco-schools is an international programme run in Wales by the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy and funded by the Welsh Government.

More than 90 per cent of schools in Wales are registered on the programme, which inspires pupils to be leaders of change in their communities and helping them to learn about sustainable living as well as global citizenship.

As part of their eco-schools platinum assessment Ysgol Brynffordd has monitored the use of gas, water, electricity and solar power as well as making links in teaching the children about eco-friendly power.

The school has also grown its own vegetables and used entrepreneurial skills to sell them as well.

Elaine Shickell, a governor at the school, said: "Achieving the platinum award is an absolute credit to all the hard work and dedication of our school community.

"We have worked hard to maintain the very high standards to ensure our school is eco friendly.

"The platinum award is evidence of the wonderful school environment we work in and the success our children so rightly deserve in caring for their school."

Rachel Critchell, acting headteacher, said: "We are all immensely proud of this award.

"It demonstrates our sustained commitment to the environment and is recognition of the fantastic work of the children and staff at Brynford School. Very well done everyone."

Esyllt Davies, education officer for Keep Wales Tidy, said: "The platinum flag is a very impressive achievement and highlights the enthusiasm that Ysgol Brynffordd has towards sustainable development.

"I'd like to congratulate and thank all of the pupils and staff involved for their hard work."
