A CHORISTER from Wrexham is about to embark on a 1,800 mile bike ride in memory of his late wife.

Andy Morris, 61, a member of the Rhos Orpheus Choir, is pushing off from his home in Rhostyllen on Sunday down to Lands End, before pedalling all the way up to John O'Groats, with the small matter of then turning around to head for home.

Mr Morris, who is a sheet metal worker for JB Fabrication Ltd on Wrexham Industrial Estate, has done the John O'Groats to Lands End cycle on two other occasions, when he was 40 and 50, but has suffered with a problem with his back in recent years.

"I'm calling this trip, there, there and back again and I think I should be OK as I've made sure I pack plenty of painkillers," he said.

"The hardest thing about making a journey like this is the mental side of things, so its important to make sure you reach your designated targets and rest points and because accommodation has been booked along the way, I already know where I will be each night."

The first port of call will be Bordesley, near Kidderminster with Mr Morris hoping to complete the entire route in just 26 days, with his inspiration throughout being his beloved wife Lynda, who died peacefully at their home in May at the age of 66.

Mr Morris added: "I think it's fair to say I was a bit of a toy boy!

"Lynda was such a well loved and respected member of the community and she worked as a District Nurse and was also on the Board of Directors at the Splash Community Trust".

The trust was formed in 2014 with the aim of saving Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, which had been earmarked for closure by the council, and all the money raised by Mr Morris on his journey will be given to either them or Rhos Orpheus Choir, depending on the wishes of the donor.

"They're obvious two organisations that are incredibly close to mine and Lynda's hearts."

Mr Morris will also mark one particular milestone on the journey when he turns 62 on the July 20, with his designated port of call being Penzance.

Natalie Lloyd, who works with Mr Morris at JB Fabrication said everyone at the company was very proud of him and they even have a specially made map to keep a track of his movements.

She said: "We are supporting him 100 per cent and he will be checking in every two days keeping us updated on where he is."
