A FORMER councillor aims to keep his town tidy by taking part in a daily litter pick.

Barrie Gregory, previous Cllr for Saltney, said he gave up the position about a month ago due to ill health, but has seen no improvements in regard to litter and dog fouling on the streets.

He has taken it upon himself to walk around the area on a daily basis and do his bit to keep the town clean.

He said: “I have mobility issues and mental health issues and it’s been getting to me quite a while.

“I’m trying to get people to be a little bit more responsible. I’ve been picking up huge amounts of dog muck and I struggle to do this, so if I can do it, being disabled, I’m sure able-bodied people can do the same.

“If I can carry on and do the little bit I can do then I’ll do it. Other people do this throughout Flintshire and have done for a long time. They want their areas to look tidy and that’s why we do it.”

Barrie said that due to cuts within the council, cuts have been made to wardens across Flintshire, and therefore, more people are not throwing their rubbish away.

He added: “Me and another chap do it and between us we have good days and bad days.

“With my mental health, I find it quite rewarding to pick up this litter and it looks clean when you’ve done it.

“I want to encourage at least one person to pick it up. I’m trying to re-educate some people that there are bins around and you do need to use them.”
