AN EX-SERVICEMAN has been jailed after punching another man.

Robert Ian Salisbury, 32, was jailed for 12 weeks after pleading guilty to assault when he appeared from custody at Wrexham Magistrates Court.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said Salisbury, who is from Wrexham, was a resident at the Ty Dewr facility for ex-servicemen where this offence was committed, but had since had his licence to live there "terminated".

The victim had also been living at Ty Dewr and on July 9, was in a communal room when Salisbury entered and motioned for him to follow him into the corridor,

Ms Jackson said Salisbury then "took a swing" at his victim, connecting with his jaw.

CCTV footage of the incident was played to the court.

The court also heard Salisbury's latest offence had triggered a suspended sentence he received in June for another matter.

Alun Williams, defending, said the incident had occurred as a result of a dispute between Salisbury and the victim, and said it was "not the most forceful of punches".

He added: "He has served in the military, has suffered from fits, and has re-trained as a scaffolder and is re-training as a plasterer.

"It is quite clear alcohol plays a massive role in his offending."

District judge Gwyn Jones said he had no option but to activate the suspended prison sentence.

He said: "At the time of that offence you were the subject of an order at court. You knew you had to work with the probation service team.

"Drink was again at the root cause of your offending. Drink and you do not agree with each other."

As well as a 12 week prison sentence, Salisbury was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
