A GROUP of nurses ran around Wrexham with a hospital bed to raise money for their unit.

About 18 staff members who work on Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s intensive care unit organised the fundraising event over the weekend as they would like to provide their patients with their own outdoor area.

Jayne Galante, organiser, said: “Our patients are very poorly when they’re with us and we wanted to raise money to buy them some extra music equipment, or televisions, but ultimately we would like to raise enough money, so we can provide an outdoor space for them.

“It went really well; the public were supportive and generous, and they were encouraging so it worked out really well.”

The event started at 11.30am at the library car park and they pushed a hospital bed, decorated with balloons through the town centre.

The nurse of 25 years said it worked out well because the Welsh Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething was also in town.

She added: “I just think intensive care is a really expensive part of the NHS and a lot of the money we have has to go on expensive equipment.

“That means there isn’t enough funding for things that aren’t as important as saving lives, so we wanted to do some fundraising to do something extra for them, not just for the patients but for their families as well.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the staff and the public for being supportive. And thanks to Health Care Matters for providing the bed which was great.

“Top Mark Uniforms provided us with the t-shirts and Marks and Spencer’s gave us refreshments which was great. As well as being for a good cause, it was a good day, everyone had a good time.”

Jayne said the JustGiving page has raised about £900 but it is not yet known how much was raised from the day.
