SAM RICKETTS liked a lot of what he saw against Airbus - but he knows his Wrexham side have still got a lot to work on.

Wrexham won their second game in a row since returning for pre-season, first half goals from new signing Mike Fondop and captain Shaun Pearson securing a 2-0 victory at The Airfield.

There were signs of progress from the opening friendly success over Lex XI the previous weekend as Wrexham played some good football going forward and created their share of chances.

But while some things came off, Ricketts, who again rang the changes at half-time. knows there are areas for improvement.

"We have done a little bit on out of possession this week, just the first few layers of any detail really," said Ricketts.

"That come off at good times and there were times where we need a little bit more detail, but we only gave the first little bit of the detail this week.

"Overall brilliant, no injuries, we won the game and some really good bits of play.

"Plenty to work on but also plenty of good things as well."

Ricketts, who again operated with a 4-2-3-1 formation in both halves, fielded an experienced side in the opening period.

Attacking midfielder Nicky Deverdics, clearly more comfortable playing in a more familiar central role, threaded a superb ball through to Fondop who supplied a cool finish to put Wrexham ahead in the 11th minute, the striker picking up where he left off for Halifax Town at the end of last season.

Deverdics went close to scoring as his shot was tipped over the bar by Airbus keeper David Roberts but Pearson made no mistake from the resulting corner to make it 2-0 on 19 minutes.

The youth team players acquitted themselves well after the break as they attempted to build on the lead as chances went begging, and Ricketts has encouraged his side to be positive when in possession.

"We are going to play football when we can but we are not going to be silly about when we play football," said Ricketts.

"When we have earned the right and the opposition drop off like they did today then we will have comfortable possession.

"I want to make sure my team can do everything and not just play possession football.

"We have to have an idea of what we are always trying to do on the ball, rather than just keeping the ball for passing sake."

Fondop, who only joined Wrexham on Monday, played 30 minutes before he was withdrawn.

"Just because he is a week behind everyone else," said Ricketts.

"The lads all played half an hour against Lex, Mike has come in a week later which is why he got half an hour at Airbus."

Ricketts feels Fondop, who was a handful as the lone striker, showed signs of what he is capable off.

"Mike is a player with huge potential, he certainly isn't the finished article but you could see he has got some height about him, size, pace, power and strength," said Ricketts,

"It is making sure that we improve him as the season goes on."

Two other players who joined Wrexham last season - midfielder Luke Summerfield and goalkeeper Rob Lainton - did not play but will head to Portugal for a training break this week.

"Luke didn't play because he has not been with us. I am not going to chop and change the game, I want to build their fitness up first rather than just expose them straight into a game scenario," said Ricketts.

Ricketts is looking forward to continuing the build up to the 2018-19 National League season in the Algarve.

"It will be a good trip and I am looking forward to it," said Ricketts.

"It will be a chance to get a good few sessions in with the players, get them together for a long amount of time.

"Not just the training but off the pitch as well. Start getting some ideas and detail across into the players within meetings scenarios as well.

"It will be a good week for everyone to get to know each other; new staff, new players, all getting to know each other and know each others personalities, and add another layer to what we are trying to do."
