A HISTORIC religious festival will celebrate its 162nd year when it takes to the streets on July 10.

Buckley residents are gearing up for the town's annual Jubilee, which takes place on Buckley Common on Tuesday and is a permanent fixture in the calendar for people of the town.

Hundreds of supporters will gather for the Jubilee, which celebrated its first procession back in 1857.

But despite its longevity, interest in the parade remains as fervent as ever with people of all ages coming out to celebrate the occasion which sees many people also return to the town.

There will be religious services ahead of the event at Bistre Emmanuel Church tomorrow (Sunday) at 10.30pm.

The religious service on the day of Jubilee takes place at the common itself at 3pm with the parade through the town starting at 3.15pm.

Bistre Emmanuel Church will lead the parade which will also include St Matthews, Trinity Methodist, Our lady of the Rosary, St. John’s United Reformed Church, Buckley Cross Methodist, Bistre Methodist, Bryn Methodist, Pentrobin Methodist and Drury Lane Methodist.

Richard Jones, County Councillor for Bistre East Ward, said: ''People look forward to it every year, and the people of Buckley will be out in force again this year.

''The turn out has dipped slightly in recent years but this current weather will hopefully see numbers back up to what they once were. It's a great day for all people of Buckley and I'm really looking forward to it.''

Due to shortages, Buckley's church groups are looking for marshals to police the event which is vital for the smooth running of the day.

Those wanting to marshal can contact chief marshal James Shone on 01244 544300.
