TRANMERE Rovers pre-season match against Liverpool will take place 24 hours earlier than planned next week to avoid a potential clash with a World Cup semi-final featuring England.

The two sides will now play at Prenton Park on Tuesday, kick off 7.30pm, regardless of England's result in Saturday's quarter-final against Sweden.

Chairman Mark Palios said: "We appreciate this is short notice for supporters but we feel the vast majority of those planning to attend would not want to miss what could be a historic fixture for England."

The match promises to be an excellent test for Micky Mellon's side prepare for the first season back in the football following promotion from the National League in May.

The announcement comes as it has been confirmed that Chester’s eagerly anticipated pre-season fixture against Liverpool will remain a 3pm kick-off despite calls to avoid a clash with England’s World Cup quarter-final.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds are set to field a strong side against the Blues for Saturday's encounter which is a 4,500 sell-out, that now clashes directly with England's huge last eight tie against Sweden.

Chester had confirmed on Wednesday they were in dialogue with Liverpool over bringing the match forward to either 12 noon, or 1pm, but after consultations it was deemed too difficult a ‘logistical challenge’ to accommodate a late switch.

England have to beat Sweden to progress to a semi-final against either Russia or Croatia in Moscow at 7pm on Wednesday, July 10. And if that does happen, conflicted fans will not have to choose between watching Harry Kane and co or Tranmere.

This will be the third consecutive summer that Liverpool have visited Prenton Park after previously running out narrow 1-0 winners in 2016 with striker Danny Ings scoring in a game which saw the debut of Sadio Mane, before last year's 4-0 victory.

The Reds had a strong season in 2017-18, finishing fourth in the Premier League and reaching the Champions League Final where they narrowly missed out to Real Madrid in Kiev at the end of last month.

Mr Palios continued: "We look forward to welcoming Liverpool and their supporters to Prenton Park on Tuesday and a good night for Merseyside football."
