A Portuguese cafe in Wrexham celebrated the opening of a new premises in time for the World Cup.

Vasco de Gama has moved to a larger unit on Lord Street and will now operate over two floors, following the opening by the Mayor Andy Williams.

Cafe owner Luis Faria, who has lived in Wrexham for 16 years, said he was really proud to have moved to the new space, which is four times bigger than the original.

He said: "This new space is really good because we want a space for everyone, not just those from within the Portuguese community.

"The Monday market stall holders are happy too, because there are now more people in the area, which is good for Wrexham."

Mr Faria has a large screen in the upstairs area and intends to show every game at this year's World Cup.

Portugal have made a strong start to the World Cup, with a 3-3 draw with Spain and 1-0 win over Morocco making them strong favourites to reach the competition's knockout stages.

He said: "The atmosphere was great and we had lots of Portuguese, Spanish and Welsh people in, which is great for bringing different cultures together.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration said that any new business is welcome in Wrexham and that he hoped the community spirit of the old cafe would transfer to the new one.

He said: "Amanda Davies, the town centre manager and her team have worked really hard with Luis and his family over the past 12 months in helping them secure these larger premises and I wish them all the very best."
