THOUSANDS of people turned up to enjoy an old village tradition that aims to bring the community together.

The Penyffordd and Penymyndd Carnival returned over the weekend to bring local people together and raise money for the village hall.

Claire Metcalfe, who organised the event, said the carnival is an old village tradition and it is important to keep that going.

She added: “I think it’s a really important event to get everyone together, we don’t have a lot of community stuff going on these days and it’s nice to see families together having a nice time and it’s important we keep that going.

“It went really well, judging from the ticket sales I would say at least a couple of thousand people showed their support. We had a really successful year again this year. We are pleased everyone turns up to support us even though the weather wasn’t as good as previous years.”

The days sees a variety of events ranging from a village parade and King and Queen ceremony, to a funfair and charity stalls.

Claire said she moved to the area four years ago and wanted to do something to meet new people so that’s why she got involved.

She added: “Without raising money for the village hall, we wouldn’t be able to keep it going. We’ve got to raise money to keep it in a good state.

“The carnival has been going for years, it’s an old tradition. There’s only a few of us who organise this now but it’s a tradition we need to keep going.

“We are really grateful for everyone who supports us every year.”

It is hoped the group have raised over £5,000 to put towards the village hall.
