Motorists have been warned of delays following a pair of vehicle fires on the A55.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call just before 2pm this afternoon reporting a vehicle ablaze on the A55 westbound near junction 33 in the Northop area.

Two fire crews, one from Mold and another from Holywell, attended the scene to find the vehicle included a horse box.

A horse was released from the box and taken to a safe place while firefighters used a hose reel jet and a set of breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

Nobody was injured and the crews left the scene at about 3.15pm, a spokesman for the fire service confirmed.

Traffic Wales has warned motorists to expect delays in the area following the fire.

This incident follows another blaze on the A55 in the same area, but on the eastbound carriageway.

The earlier blaze was reported to the fire and rescue service just after 12noon and involved a car.

A pair of fire crews attended the scene and used two hose reel jets, two sets of breathing apparatus, spreaders and cutters to tackle the blaze.

The incident had been caused by a collision and resulted in the car being destroyed by fire, a spokesman for the fire and rescue service confirmed.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman told the Leader: "We received a call at 11.58am to the A55 in Northop, reporting a collision.

"We sent four ambulances and an rapid response vehicle and conveyed five patients, all with minor injuries, to the Countess of Chester Hospital."
