Shopmobility scooter users in Wrexham spent in excess of £600k in the town last year.

The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) headlined the figure at the Town Centre Forum meeting on Monday evening.

John Gallanders, Chief Officer of AVOW highlighted the importance scooter users have on the local economy while making a case for each vehicle being a potentially great advertising opportunity for businesses.

He said: "The service transferred from Wrexham Council in September 2016 and AVOW have operated a fleet of 31 scooters and wheelchairs to meet a variety of needs.

"We are appealing to businesses to become a Friend of Wrexham Shopmobility and help ensure the service continues to operate with a well maintained fleet of scooters to ensure the £600k spending remains in the town."

Each scooter costs an average of £175 a year for basic maintenance, while the electricity bill for re-charging them is approximately £4k per year, but Mr Gallanders said that some of the fleet also needs replacing.

He said: "There are a number of ways in which your business could help financially or in kind, depending on how large or small your business may be."
