WREXHAM residents were given the chance to witness a rare sheep shearing event at Ty Mawr country park.

The shearing is an annual occasion, and involves park employees removing the winter coats of resident sheep ahead of the warm summer months.

There were also wool crafting activities on offer, including a spinning and weaving workshop involving the use of the recently sheared wool.

Children also crafted their own sheep using cardboard and the sheep's removed fleeces.

About 400 people attended the event where they had the opportunity to learn about the different ways in which wool has been used over the years, while children also enjoyed a tractor ride across the country park.

Liz Carding, Wrexham Council Senior Parks and Countryside officer, helped to organise the event.

She said: ''It was great to see so many people down here for the afternoon, it's nice that so many people are taking in an interest in the work we do and the events we put on.

''For those who enjoyed the spinning and weaving, we have a monthly spinning class on the first Wednesday of every month at Ty Mawr.''
