A "HERO" police officer jumped into a canal in Boughton, Chester in the early hours of Friday to save a young woman's life.
Cheshire police were alerted to an incident on a bridge over the canal at 2.45am, where there was concern for an 18-year-old woman's safety.
A Cheshire police spokesperson explained: "She appeared to be in distress and had a head injury.
"Officers monitored footage on CCTV and went to the scene, and one of the officers has jumped in to save her.
"She was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and is now in custody."
Chief Inspector Mike Evans, local policing commander for Chester and surrounding villages, wrote on Twitter: "I opened an email from my night Sgt detailing how one of our cops jumped into a canal at 4am this morning to save a young girl intent on taking her own life.
"99% of our cops are absolute heroes."
Replies to his tweet from members of the public insisted the figure should be more like 99.9%.
