OPEN for around six weeks and taking up a prime location next to the flourishing Alehouse on Earl Road, Latitude53° is proving to be a very welcome addition to Mold's flourishing food scene.

The owners have worked wonders with a small space, adopting a great 'shabby chic' look with recycled furniture and even some reused Victorian timbers found in a skip!

But what about the food? Opting for the 'own recipe' Welsh rarebit on their self-baked bread, choosing brown, with homemade chutney, my dining companion wasn't disappointed.

Two good sized slices of pure comfort food, with a generous heap of the chutney and side salad (there's also the option of a slice of gammon with this) proved a hearty lunch. The cheesy topping was tangy, with the dark bread adding a slightly nutty kick. There was no need for extra seasoning or sauces.

Despite being more than enough to see her through to tea time, she is a firm believer of 'there's always room for cake'.

The gluten-free lemon sponge cake was chosen and devoured quickly. It was light and just lemony enough, with the soft cream icing giving it an indulgent feel.

There's a pleasingly diverse mix of smaller, lighter meals alongside a few mains and specials and it was one of those I opted for with the chicken Ceaser salad. I was rewarded with a huge oval dish piled high with chunky pieces of chicken, tangy bacon and all manner of greens alongside huge crispy croutons and tasty egg. It was delicious but I did miss the option of anchovies which historically are an essential part of a Ceaser salad according to its creator Caesar Cardini.

With my companion opting for the cake, I sated my sweet tooth with a scone severed with lashings of clotted cream and delicious raspberry jam. The scone had that lovely melt in the mouth quality and had been customised with sweetness with dried fruit. Like all the food served they felt fresh, homemade and prepared with a degree of care which was complemented by the excellent and fast service we received.

All round it was pretty much the perfect package for a quick lunchtime bite and if it carries on like this Latitude53° will be well worth marking on the map.
