COMMUNITY support ensured Blacon Boxing Club has won a competition ring owned by super middle-weight champion George Groves.
The contest, which was open to clubs across the UK, relied upon who could obtain the most votes for the 16ft professional piece of equipment.
And after the votes were totted up, George Groves announced on Twitter the winners were Blacon Boxing Club, based in Blacon High School.
The club’s head coach Ross Broadbent said: “Everyone is made up. Any club in the UK could have won it but we had a lot of support from the community.
“It is about 18 months since we started and we are going from strength to strength. We had our first two kids to represent the club competing, Bradley Broadbent and Deryn Irvine. We have a few other kids ready but those two were the ones who for us have made a little bit of history.
“We are affiliated with England Boxing and we are hoping to host our very own club show at Chester racecourse by the end of the year.
“On behalf of myself and the people at the club, I would like to thank all the supporters for getting us off the ground.”
