A new town crier is proud to be the only one of his kind in Flintshire.

Holywell Town Council appointed Chris Baglin as the new voice of the area in a bid to revive civic traditions and promote the town as a positive destination.

Chris, of Mostyn, said the competition "was a bit like the X Factor" and was eager to take part as soon as he saw the advertisement.

He said: "I am officially Holywell's town crier and I will promote the town as much as I can. I've already been asked by other councils in Wales to act as their crier.

"It's certainly an interesting role and I've always had a loud voice, so it's nice to find a use for it.

"I'm bilingual, and work part-time for Menter Iaith so I'll definitely be pushing Welsh language use as a town crier."

Chris opened Holywell council's AGM at The Stamford Gate Hotel, where guests and councillors had a shock when he began booming his announcement - in Welsh first and then in English - and ringing his custom town crier bell.

His red robes are made to fit and add panache to his role, which already requires much confidence, and in due course he will receive an official badge to be fitted on his robe.

As a primary school teacher, Chris is well used to standing in front of others and making his voice heard.

He said he looks forward to representing the town, and hopes to maintain this role for a long time. He said: "The contract is basically until they get sick of hearing my voice!"

A strange but exciting element for Chris in this new role is the opportunity to join clubs and organisations. He said: "Would you believe there's a town crier organisations - the Guild of town criers and the Royal Order.

Martin Fearnley, community engagement officer at Holywell council, said: "A town was suggested at a sub-committee meeting and we just decided to go along with it.

"It definitely sets Holywell apart from other towns. It's a throwback to the civic days, and Holywell has been classed as the most historic High Street in Flintshire with its buildings and structures."
