A COMMUNITY has vowed to fight proposals for a travellers site in their village.

A campaign group has been formed to fight proposals for the potential site in Brymbo, as earmarked in Wrexham Council's proposed Local Development Plan (LDP).

The council is due to finalise its LDP next year, marking out which sites across the county can be developed over the next 15 years, and which can be protected.

Consultation on the document is currently taking place until May 31 before the preferred plan is set by the Welsh Government.

Residents in Brymbo have a number of site specific concerns about the land proposed for a Gypsy and Traveller site at Coedyfelin Road, which was previously used as a sewerage treatment works.

A spokesman for the group said: "We have formed a campaign group to object to the proposals for a Gypsy and Traveller site in Brymbo as the former sewerage treatment works at Coedyfelin Road is wholly unsuitable for development.

"There are a range of issues affecting the site.

"Primarily serious concerns raised regarding highway safety on this section of road and that there is a strong probability that the land is contaminated and part of the proposed site includes a working sewerage pumping station raising concerns about air odour and safety.

"These along with the many other site constraints question whether the site is deliverable or economically viable to take forward.

"The group will be working over the next fortnight to ensure residents objections are submitted as part of the consultation."

County Councillor Paul Rogers who previously fought a similar proposal in 2010 added: "A group has been formed to object to this proposal and we will fight this all the way as a community.

"The recent consultation drop in at the enterprise centre was very well attended

"It is important residents take part in the consultation which closes at the end of this month."
