Exciting plans have been revealed for a new zip wire adventure park on disused land in Wrexham.

The site at Gresford Wilderness Tip is situated just off Bluebell Lane on the outskirts of Pandy.

Go Below, who currently operate high-adrenaline adventure centres at both Conwy Falls (near Betws-Y-Coed) and Tanygrisiau, offer truly unique experiences, and plan to do the same at Gresford.

Three zipwires, running to a total of 1km in length with a 36-metre drop, will offer thrill-seekers the opportunity to experience extremely fast speeds.

The ambitious plans also include: an adventure tower with climbing activities and a free-fall jump, a family-sized giant swing, an artificial cave system telling the story of mining in Gresford, as well as an electric model Land Rover safari circuit for young children.

Miles Moulding, of Go Below said of the plans “It will be the only one in the North East of Wales, and the location is very easy to access.

“It’s ex-colliery land so has to be used for leisure purposes as part of the covenants attached to it.”

It’s not the first time a significant proposal has been put forward for the land as it was earmarked for a national ski jump facility, until falling through in 2009.

However, the planning and landscaping that went into that project created a high point on the land that Mr Moulding thinks would be the perfect launch point for the zip line.

He said: “We were actually looking for a site just like this but there aren’t many of them around that are long and narrow enough, but this land is just right.”

Although the highlight, the adventure park won’t just be about the zip-line with the proposal to build an artificial coal mine, adding both a fun and educational element.

“Mining history is close to the heart for us really and this is obviously a very important site historically.”

The artificial mine will be a partially covered series of purpose-built tunnels which will be made to look as authentic as possible while providing an educational angle for all the family to experience.

Joe Bickerton, Destination Manager at Wrexham Council is hugely excited by the plans and announced a public consultation will take place at the Gresford Colliery Social Club next week.

He said of the land: “It just lends itself so well to this zip park idea.

“What we want to do is make sure we’re part of that North Wales adventure family and to have something that’s adrenalin fuelled and easily accessible.”

Mr Bickerton also highlighted the potential for bringing tourism into Wrexham from the likes of Merseyside, Cheshire and Shropshire.

He said: “It’s a huge catchment area, with lots of families and lots of people having access by both road and rail.

“The council is really committed to growing its tourism industry and over the last 6 years, the county has been the fastest growing tourism destination in Wales.”

If the plans come to fruition, the park also has the potential to create up to 20 height-defying jobs.
