A MAN spoke of his concerns after finding what he believes could be a huge pile of asbestos dumped in a lay by.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he was driving down an unnamed road in Cilcain this afternoon (Tuesday) when he made the discovery.

He told the Leader: "I was driving in Cilcain and I took the road towards the quarry. As I came round the corner there it was - I've never seen anything like it.

"It wasn't there yesterday so I think it must have been dumped this morning and I think it looks like asbestos.

"My worry is, if it is asbestos I think the road should be closed - there is a school nearby. If it is dusty and if it is getting blown around that stuff isn't good for you.

"There is so much of it - it looks like a whole roof and you can see where it has dragged over the road. It has just been left there in the lay by.

The man said he hadn't reported it to the police or council.

Flintshire Council has been approached by the Leader.

Cilcain councillor Owen Thomas said his ward has seen several fly-tipping incidents over recent months, the most significant of which included a complete shed abandoned in a field just before Christmas.

He told the Leader: "We have had quite a few of them, with the shed they just opened a gate and dumped it in a field up the mountain in Cilcain. It was a whole rotten shed."

Cllr Thomas added he has concerns that some of the fly-tipping incidents in Cilcain may have been caused by rogue traders.

He urged any residents paying for items to be disposed of to check those taking them away are legitimate traders.
