CHILDREN learned about the days when pirates ruled the ocean waves.

Pupils from years one and two at Alexandra CP School in Wrexham enjoyed an immersion day packed with activities to introduce them to their latest class topic.

Around 90 children all donned costumes, sang sea shanties, took part in craft activities and drew treasure maps - and even had a chance to walk the plank.

Foundation phase leader Rhian Carroll thanked parents for their efforts with the costumes and told how the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed the immersion day.

Speaking during a break in the day's activities, she said: "They're having a really good day, there are smiles all round.

"They've loved it. They're all excited to come back for the second half of the day. They all gave themselves pirate names, which has been very funny."

There is plenty more informative fun on the horizon, as Miss Carroll told how teachers were planning future activities, including learning about famous pirates, treasure hunts, writing sea shanties, scientific work themed around treasure
