A FAMILY is celebrating after its youngest member arrived on its oldest member’s birthday.

Hayley Roberts, of Queens Park in Wrexham, said she was delighted and surprised at the arrival of her daughter Bethany Powell’s baby Lola Nicole Smith on January 14.

She said Lola’s arrival not only meant the family now has five generations – but as she coincidentally arrived on Hayley’s grandmother Elizabeth’s birthday, the oldest and youngest members of the family will be celebrating their birthdays together in the years to come.

Mrs Roberts told the Leader: “Bethany wasn’t due until January 22 but Lola was born on the 15th. She found out on the Friday that she was going to be started and had the baby on the Sunday.

"I was a bit gutted I couldn't see her until the Monday because the hospital wouldn't let me in with the flu being around, but she video called me as soon as she could - it was a very emotional moment.

”We were all really pleased and my nan was chuffed to bits Lola was born on her birthday. We’ve not done anything to celebrate yet unfortunately – it might be for the next birthday."

Her 18-year-old daughter Bethany is part way through a health and beauty qualification at Coleg Cambria Yale.

The Leader reported in 2014 how Mrs Roberts' niece Nicole Powell died aged 19 just three weeks after being told she had incurable adrenal cancer which had spread through her body.

Hundreds of family members and friends turned out in bright clothing to say farewell to the brave teenager, whose funeral was held at St Giles Church in the centre of Wrexham.

Mrs Roberts added: "After losing Nicole this was something nice to look forward to - Lola's middle name was chosen after Nicole."

The five generations of the family are Elizabeth (Betty) France aged 86, her daughter Gillian Powell aged 64 tomorrow (Tuesday), Gillian’s daughter Hayley Roberts aged 39, Hayley’s daughter Bethany Powell aged 18 and Bethany’s daughter Lola, born just last month.
