NEWTOWN face another vital double header starting with a visit from Prestatyn Town on Saturday (2.30pm).

Porthmadog then pay a visit on Tuesday evening, as Darren Ryan’s side attempt to break into the top 12.

Confidence is high in the Robins camp after following up their 5-1 demolition of Technogroup Welshpool last week with a 2-2 draw at home to Port Talbot Town in midweek.

“I cannot fault the lads,” said Ryan. “They are giving me everything they have and are sweating blood to get Newtown into the top 10.

“After the Bala Town game last week I told the lads there would be no more dressing room talk of relegation.

“I just felt there was enough pressure on the players, without them putting any more on themselves.”

The tactic appears to have worked as Newtown go into the weekend two points off 12th placed Haverfordwest County with a game in hand.

However Ryan warns Prestatyn Town represent a significant challenge, with the Seasiders currently enjoying an historic season.

“They have invested wisely in getting some experienced players in over the summer and their Welsh Cup victory over Rhyl showed how good they are.”

One player aiming to derail Newtown’s survival bid is ex-Welshpool Town striker Steve Rogers.

The 31-year-old made 165 appearances and scored 80 goals during six seasons at Maesydre, having also represented Caersws, TNS and Newtown in an 11 year top flight career.

Rogers turned down an opportunity to return to Latham Park in January, opting instead to fight for his place at Prestatyn.

Rogers said: “I am really enjoying my time at Prestatyn Town and hopefully I can end the season with a Welsh Cup medal.

“I have a lot of time for Darren Ryan and Newtown FC and it would be a tragedy if such a well-run club were relegated this season.

“I only had a few games for them back in 2001 and although I scored a few it turned out Brian Coyne did not fancy me as a player.

“Since then I have enjoyed my games against Newtown and I have built up a really good scoring record against them over the years.”

However Rogers hopes Newtown can make the cut for the Super 12.

“I really enjoy games in Mid Wales,” said Rogers. “I have made some great friends over the years and I would never rule out finishing my career back there.”
