LATHAM Park will host the eagerly anticipated Welsh Cup semi-final between Bangor City and Prestatyn Town on Sunday, April 11.

The showpiece clash will be screened live on S4C, with the victors taking on Port Talbot Town or Bala Town at Parc-Y-Scarlets in Llanelli on May 2.

The decision to award the semi-final to Newtown has been warmly greeted by both clubs.

City manager Neville Powell said: “It’s a good football stadium with one of the best football pitches in the League.

“We at Bangor, all have fond memories at Latham Park, so we are relishing the day already.”

Prestatyn Town striker Steve Rogers concurred and dubbed the stadium among the best in Wales.

“I have always enjoyed playing there and I would have thought that there are not too many players around that do not look forward to any game at Latham Park.

“There will be a cracking atmosphere and hopefully I can get to my first ever Welsh Cup Final.”

Newtown Football Club secretary Owen Durbridge hopes the awarding of such a high profile game will boost the Robins’ chances of attaining grant aid from the Welsh FA for ground improvements.

Newtown are currently being considered to be Mid Wales’ official representative ground for UEFA competition.

However Aberystwyth Town are also being considered, while the Welsh FA are also rumoured to be considering the controversial allocation of funds to upgrade Wrexham Football Club’s Racecourse Ground.

Durbridge said: “We are delighted that Latham Park has been selected for such a high profile game.

“We had expected to be awarded the other semi-final, but as ever we are delighted to be chosen to stage any game of such importance.

“We regularly host high profile games at Latham Park and we would like to think that this means Newtown is still under consideration for the extra funding.

“There has been no news either way yet, but we know that this has been a popular choice for Bangor City and Prestatyn Town, which underlines how highly regarded Latham Park and Newtown Football Club is throughout Wales.”
