Two new schools have been officially opened following amulti-million pound investment.

Welsh Government cabinet secretary for education, Kirsty Williams, came to Wrexham to open the new Gwenfro and Hafod Y Wern schools in Caia Park.

The schools represent £10 million of investment by the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme and Wrexham Council.

Both schools have been built to BREEAM standards, the world’s longest established method of assessing, rating and certifying the sustainability of buildings.

Kirsty Williams said: “These two wonderful new schools are a great example of how together we are successfully delivering on our commitment to create the best learning environments for those children and communities who need it most.

”This investment is not only benefiting the teachers and children, but also providing training and work experience opportunities for the local community, and jobs for the local supply chains.”

Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education, said: “I was proud to be in Caia today for the opening of these two new schools.

“The council is committed to improving its schools’ infrastructures across the county borough with financial assistance from the Welsh Government.

“This will ensure that every child and teacher can learn and teach in an environment that is equipped with the technologies and facilities needed to deliver a 21st Century curriculum.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in these two projects for their hard work in bringing them in on time and budget, which is to be commended.”

Headteacher of Hafod y Wern, Simon Edwards, said: “This is a very proud day for the school and I am very pleased to welcome the cabinet secretary here to officially open the new facilities.

“Everyone has settled very well into the new environment and we are looking to the future with certainty and commitment.”

Chairman of the Governors at Gwenfro CP school, Darren Jacks, said: “At Gwenfro we are delighted with our new facilities.

“We have just had a very successful Estyn Inspection which gives us the confidence to continue to ensure our young pupils achieve their full potential.”

RL Davies & Sons Ltd built the new Hafod y Wern CP facility and Wynne Construction built Gwenfro CP.
