Hundreds turned out to welcome a rock star and his wife to Wrexham as part of a mammoth 130-mile trek. Mike Peters, frontman of rock band The Alarm, and his wife Jules arrived at The Racecourse on Friday as part of his charity walk. It forms part of the By Your Side’ cancer care campaign, set up by the pair alongside Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board charity Awyr Las in 2014. The pair’s arrival at The Racecourse saw a range of different activities and events staged through the afternoon, including the launch of the new Wrexham AFC strip.Mike said: “When I launched the By Your Side cancer care campaign with our North Wales NHS Charity, Awyr Las, two years ago I was a man on a mission. “I wanted to help others like me get the very best quality treatment and care right here in North Wales; I hoped to encourage people to keep active; and I aimed to celebrate all that is great about our NHS. “What better way to raise money than to get out there and enjoy the absolutely stunning scenery we have in this part of the world?” North Walian Mike, who has been living with leukemia for more than 10 years, having previously gone into remission after being diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, has been cared for by the NHS in North Wales for more than 20 years. He still takes medication daily and receives additional treatment every two months on the Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Jules was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump when taking part in a TV documentary. She had to endure multiple bouts of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to battle the disease. Welsh tenor Rhys Meirion, who has enjoyed international success in opera and recording, took part in Friday’s section of the walk. He said: “It is such a pleasure to accompany Mike and Jules on parts of this walk. People have been coming out to support us along the route and have been incredibly generous with their donations and their cheers. “The atmosphere has been amazing along the way and every single penny people give goes directly towards cancer care services here in North Wales so we urge everyone to come out and meet us if the route comes close to where they live.” Activities included musical performances from The Colombians, Luke Gallagher, Gareth Owen and Carl Croconbe, plus four choirs accompanying Mike as he performed. The first leg of the 10-day walk started at Flint Castle, finishing 10 miles later at the Chocks Away Cafe in Broughton. After their appearance in Wrexham, the pair are heading west and will finish at Caernarfon Castle on Friday.
