The local authority has put forward its view on which route should be adpoted for a £200m road improvement scheme.

Flintshire Council has published its view that the ‘Red Route’ should be adopted as part of Welsh Government proposals to improve the Deeside Corridor.

They added, however, that some elements of the ‘Blue Route’ should also be included in the scheme.

The Blue Route involves widening the A55/A494 route, including three lanes in each direction.

The Red Route involves a new road between the A55 and A458 via the Flintshire Bridge and a new junction to join the A55 near Northop/Flint Mountain.

In a document released ahead of the council’s environment overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Friday, the council laid out why it prefers the Red Route.

They said: “Flintshire Council considers that on balance, the most beneficial route to the council and North Wales would be the Red Route.

“It offers both strategic long term network improvements... as well as providing for improved economic and social connectivity and benefits.

“The route would provide improved network resilience and transport security by the provision of a second gateway into Wales.”

The council add the proposal would see a reduced impact on the road network during construction work, and would remove the ”significant long-term maintenance risks” associated with Flintshire Council’s continued ownership of Flintshire Bridge.

However, they added that a number of additional elements should be considered alongside the plan.

This included work to mitigate environmental impact, introduction of noise barriers on Aston Hill, remodelling the Ewloe interchange and amendments to other junctions along the road.

They added that options to improve the wind impact on the current Flintshire Bridge should be looked at, as well as the introduction of a crawler lane on the westbound carriageway before Halkyn.

The consultation process for the proposals has already ended.

Flintshire Council explained the delay in their response to the consultation was due to the General Election.

They have asked that Welsh Government allow for their response to be considered.
