ROB EVANS says his move to Billericay Town was just ‘too good to turn down’.

Evans, dumped by his home-town club a month ago, is now uprooting from his Penycae home and moving to East London on a three-year-deal with the non-league big spenders.

“The move really excites me,” said Evans. “I got a call out of the blue last week to say they were interested and I went down there to talk to the owner and manager.

“As soon as I spoke to him, I wanted to sign. It’s a great project the club are embarking on and to get a three year deal and to be part of it is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Billericay’s current claim to fame is it’s link with cult sitcom Gavin and Stacey, but owner Glenn Tamplin plans to transform the Southern League Premier Division side into a Football League outfit.

“He’s ploughed a lot of money into the club with Jamie O’Hara and Paul Konchesky already signed up – and Ian Hendon has come in as the Director of Football.

“He knows the owner of Fleetwood Town very well and wants to do what they did by going through the leagues and into League One,” added Evans, who scored six times in 106 appearances for the Reds after making his debut in 2012.

“It’s going to be a real adventure and I can’t wait.

“I’ve been at Wrexham since I was seven and it’s time to get away. Yes, it was hard to be told I wasn’t part of Dean’s plans but that’s football. You have to accept it and I’ve got no grudge against Dean or the club.

“I’ll always look out for Wrexham’s result and I want to see them back in the league.

“It’s moving away from home but I’ve got a place to live  in Romford sorted out.

“If I’d have turned down this offer, I think I’d have lived to regret it.”

The club’s ambitious owner is also transforming Billericay’s New Lodge ground into a 5000-seater stadium, ploughing nearly £4million in to renovate and improve it.

Multi-millionare Tamplin said: "We have submitted two stages of planning for the grounds.

"Our clubhouse will be roughly treble the size it is now, along with a VIP restaurant upstairs for our corporate sponsors and VIP guests to enjoy a five-course meal before they take their seats on a balcony for the game.

"We will have huge changing rooms complete with ice baths, toilets in each corner of the ground, food facilities in three corners of the ground and two large bar areas - one of which will be for season ticket holders only and the other for regular match tickets."

Evans will team up with his new club next month but has plenty to celebrate in the meantime.

“It’s my birthday on Monday and I’m off on holiday to Tenerife soon, so at the moment things couldn’t be going better for me,” added Evans, who will be 22 next week.

“It’s never nice to leave a club and then there’s the worry of finding another one. You’re out of work, not getting paid and you’ve got bills to pay.

“As I said, that call from my agent to say Billericay wanted to talk to me came right of the blue. I wasn’t expecting that.

“But having talked to the owner and listened to his plans, I can’t wait to get down there.”
