AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a Welsh Premier Development League (North) match in Newtown ended in chaos on Sunday.

Visitors, Airbus UK Broughton led 2-1 despite being reduced to nine men - before a mass brawl saw the game abandoned with 10 minutes remaining.

Several Newtown players sustained minor injuries before the referee called a halt to proceedings.

The incident is now being investigated by both clubs and the Football Association of Wales (FAW), which confirmed the case is already in the hands of their disciplinary department.

“We have received a referee’s report and the incident is being investigated,” said Welsh Premier League secretary Gwyn Derfel.

Meanwhile Dyfed Powys Police are also investigating the incident after receiving complaints.

A Dyfed Powys Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating an incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon, December 20, during a football match being played at Latham Park, Newtown

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101.”

AFC Newtown are also investigating.

Club secretary, Owen Durbridge said: “We are seeking information from spectators at the ground, particularly the two Mid Wales youth teams’ players from Newtown and Llanfair United who were waiting to play on the pitch. 

“Any information can be helpful to both the FAW and the police investigations.

Newtown sit in 10th place in the Development League after 10 matches, while their visitors, Airbus are in sixth place.
