RESIDENTS fear plans to build more than 30 new homes in Higher Kinnerton could destroy the character of their village.

David Wilson Homes North West has applied for permission to build 34 homes at Babylon Fields, Main Road.

Members of Flintshire Council’s planning committee will meet tomorrow to decide whether to give the application the green light.

But one concerned resident, who did not wish to be named, said the vast majority of villagers were opposed to the development.

“It is too large and will destroy the character of our village. It will be over-bearing and over dominating,” he said.

“We are very worried about road safety because of the increase in traffic and the impact it will have on local schools and the village infrastructure.

“There are already around 20 houses up for sale in the village so we have to question the wisdom of building 34 new homes in the current economic climate.”

More than 100 villagers have signed a petition against the development and over 240 letters of objection have been received by Flintshire Council.

Higher Kinnerton Cllr Norma Humphreys said: “I’m not opposed to new houses being built. The site is part of the council’s unitary development plan so it is going to be developed at some point.

“But I am worried about the impact on schools and roads. The road is already very busy and full of traffic so that is a serious concern.”

Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant met with villagers last week to discuss their concerns. He said: “The fact that over 100 residents have signed a petition demonstrates the strength of feeling in the village.

“I hope the planning committee takes those concerns into consideration on Wednesday.”
