A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a crash on the A539 in the Maelor area of Wrexham.

The accident happened at about 1pm yesterday between Hanmer and Penley at the Pigeon Lane turn-off for Halghton, near Cumber’s Bank.

The rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.

The road was closed for several hours as the accident was investigated.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “Police were called to the scene at 12.55pm.

“The single vehicle collision involved a Red Yamaha motorcycle on the A539 travelling in the direction of Penley from Hanmer.”

They said the male rider was not from North Wales, Shropshire or Cheshire and appealed for anyone with information to contact North Wales Police on 101.

Overton councillor Lloyd Kenyon expressed his sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.

The accident comes almost exactly a year after 26-year-old motorcyclist Matthew Gregory, from Erbistock, lost his life on same road near Penley on September 20, 2009.

A CAR and the caravan it was towing overturned on the Wrexham bypass leading to major traffic disruption.

It is believed the driver of the red Range Rover Discovery escaped with only minor injuries following the accident on the north-bound carriageway of the A483, just past the Gresford slip road, at about 12.20pm yesterday.

There were long delays on the north-bound carriageway in the direction of Chester until the road was cleared but police say the lane was cleared within an hour.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said no-one was trapped in the vehicle and one casualty was taken to hospital. A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “We were called to the A483 near the Gresford off-slip at 12.20pm.

“One car and a caravan had overturned. Everyone got out of the vehicle.”

Phil Acott, 28, from Holywell, who was travelling to Wrexham at the time and drove past the scene, said: “There was a vehicle on its side and it was blocking the carriageway.

“There are ambulances and quite a few police cars.”
