TWO men who conspired to rob a couple of £100,000 and jewellery worth £40,000 are today behind bars.

Businessman Lawrence Levey and co-defendant Gary Warner denied their part in a robbery which left Peter Davies and his wife Jacqueline tied up and covered in oil at their secluded home.

But a jury at Mold Crown Court found the pair guilty following an eight-day trial.

Judge Niclas Parry said: “You subjected your victims to a terrifying ordeal.

“You forced your victims to re-live their ordeal in a public arena.

“You hoped to pull the wool over the jury’s eyes.”

Levey, 56, of Mossley Hill Drive, Liverpool, was jailed for 10 years and Warner, 45, of Beteler Court, Warrington, for 16 years.

The judge said both men would serve half of their sentence in custody.

Scrap metal dealer Mr Davies, 64, and his 65-year-old wife were bound up with tape by three masked men during the robbery at their home in Leeswood, Mold, in August last year.

Mr Davies’ clothes were cut from him and his wife was threatened he would be killed if they were not shown where the money was in the house.

The three men fled with £100,000 in cash together with jewellery valued at more than £40,000.

Mr and Mrs Davies were left tied to a snooker table in their hallway and covered in oil.

John Philpotts, prosecuting, told the court Warner was one of the three masked robbers at the house.

He said Levey had been to the house previously to be paid cash for a £13,500 Rolex watch and was part of the plan after identifying Mr Davies as a potentially lucrative target.

Before sentencing, Stephen Riordan, QC, representing Levey, who runs jewellery businesses in Liverpool and Warrington, said the defendant was the sole carer for his 86-year-old mother.

He added: “This was a single, momentary aberration in an otherwise exemplary law abiding man.”

In sentencing, Judge Parry told Levey: “You breached the substantial trust placed in you by a customer. I have no doubt you endeavoured to enhance the success of your business by knowingly associating with serious violent criminals.

“You were not present in the house on the night but yours was a crucial role.”

He told Warner: “I have no doubt you were one of the three men inside that house.”

As the pair were taken from the dock, a female member of the public shouted to the judge and jury: “You have destroyed my family. I hope you can live with yourselves.”

- The two remaining masked men have never been caught but investigations to trace them are continuing. Anyone with information can call North Wales Police on 101.
