A NEW science block has opened at a Wrexham school in memory of a former pupil.

The new unit at Ysgol Bryn Alyn in Gwersyllt, which also includes an IT suite, has been named the Craig Owen Science Block to commemorate the 16-year-old, of Brymbo, who died while on a family holiday in August 2008.

Tragedy struck when a sand dune collapsed on him at Cefn Sidan Sands, South Wales.

The teenager had been due to receive his GCSE results from the school three weeks after the tragedy occurred. He achieved five A stars and five As.

His parents, Jayne and Ron Owen, officially opened the new two-storey block with the unveiling of a plaque during a ceremony at the school.

Project managed by Wrexham Council, building work was undertaken by local company Read Construction Holdings and the official opening on Monday was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Ian and Hilary Roberts.

Headteacher Brian Whiteley said: “This is a very exciting day for the school and I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this fantastic project to fruition.

“The Craig Owen Science Block will help the school to provide a first-class education and will help pupils achieve their full potential.”

The project was part of a £20 million investment into three secondary schools in Wrexham, which also include a new sports hall at the Maelor School in Penley and a new science and ICT facility at Darland High School in Gresford.
