A business leader has put forward proposals to expand Wrexham’s outdoor market across the town centre.

The chairman of Wrexham Chamber of Toursim and Trade Alex Jones said he would like to see the Queen’s Square market expand down Hope Street and continue with pitches along available points up High Street – for example in front of the Nationwide and Barclays banks, outside of Burtons and on the cobbles.

The market could not go down Town Hill because of access to the church.

“With free car parking coming in that’s great but we can’t stop there,” he said. “It might encourage people to visit Eagles Meadow and shops they might not go to otherwise.

“As it is you park at Water World, go to the Monday market, go to Nero’s and go home.”

He said it would not be a separate new market as such, but a continuous extension of the Monday market across the town centre.

“I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with our market, but let’s try to utilise the 50 market stalls on the waiting list

“We’re not trying to take business away from the indoor markets, we’re just trying to do something positive.

Town centre manager Isobel Watson said: “Wrexham Council is still in the consultation process with local businesses regarding improvements to the High Street, the results of which will be put before members in November.”

“All businesses involved with the consultation process have expressed a desire to see bus services return to High Street and we are currently exploring this matter.”

Rob Clarke, of the Wrexham Market Traders Federation, said: “I think it would be good  if it brought more people down that way in town, but it would have to be well thought through.

“The traders in the market would have to be consulted – for example if there was a meat van right outside a butcher’s it might not be so good.

“If there are no clashes and it’s properly planned it could be beneficial.”
